# Building a Dynamic Knowledgebase with a Help Center Function Based on Confluence and Scroll Viewport

> How the Deutscher Alpenverein turned Confluence into a public knowledgebase, help center and learning portal with courses and quizzes – using Scroll Viewport.

The Deutscher Alpenverein wanted to make its Confluence knowledge as easy to access as a website – without the upkeep of a website. With Confluence and Scroll Viewport, that became DAV360 Wissen: a knowledgebase, a help center and a learning portal with courses and quizzes.

## About the DAV

The [Deutscher Alpenverein e.V.](https://www.alpenverein.de/) is the largest mountain sports club in the world and, with 1,351,247 members across 358 independent sections, one of the most significant sports and nature conservation associations in Germany.

The DAV's responsibilities include protecting the habitat of many animal and plant species, as well as operating and maintaining 321 public huts, 20,400 overnight accommodations, and around 30,000 kilometers of hiking trails. 18,000 volunteer trainers also contribute to a varied course program with 165,000 offerings each year across various types of mountain sports.

## Building a Knowledgebase and a Help Center – DAV360 Hilfe & Wissen

This success story explains, using a practical example, how Confluence and K15t's [Scroll Viewport](https://www.k15t.com/software/scroll-viewport) plugin can be used to build a dynamic, quickly editable website.

Comparing an internal company Confluence with a classic homepage or website reveals fundamental differences. Confluence pages or articles are edited daily, while a homepage is edited less often, since it is typically less accessible. However, more people likely visit the company website daily than visit individual Confluence pages. Further differences between websites and Confluence show up in the web layout and the URLs.

At the intersection of easily editable Confluence pages and layout-friendly HTML websites is where this customer success story with the DAV comes in. The DAV decided to provide its many users across the individual sections with a unified knowledgebase and a help center for documenting workflows and processes and for supporting staff inquiries.

The goal of the project was to combine the two advantages of Confluence and websites mentioned above, creating a knowledgebase with extensive content on all DAV topics that is as fast and dynamic to edit as Confluence, while attracting just as many visitors as a normal homepage.

With the help of Scroll Viewport, our team worked with the DAV team to lay out a clear website in a very short time and jointly present content from Confluence as an accessible knowledgebase. The plugin offers a clean separation between the content in Confluence and its presentation in an appealing web layout.

The XALT team accompanied the DAV's editorial team step by step and provided consulting on implementing the presentation. To maximize the user experience and performance for users and editors, progress and the structure of the knowledgebase were discussed, documented and updated in weekly meetings.

To simplify editorial use of the knowledgebase, our team set up, among other things, custom page templates and a detailed editorial guideline that gave the DAV team an overview of the individual work steps and the plugins used. Building a website with Scroll Viewport also offers additional advantages:

- Live update of content after publishing
- custom URLs for a unique web presence
- fully custom layout possible with little effort
- no code and no web server required

As a complement to the knowledgebase, a help center called DAV360-Hilfe was set up. For this, the Confluence documentation was published as a laid-out help center with its own domain.

Users have the option to search and filter relevant content on specific topics through a clear interface and easy-to-use navigation. Alternatively, a support ticket can also be created for the IT team.

- Measure and improve the success of the help center with Google Analytics
- easy linking of knowledgebase articles with the help center
- additional option to create support tickets to the IT team if a relevant article cannot be found

## Knowledge Checks Using Learning Paths and Quizzes

Alongside the knowledgebase and help center, the DAV requested the option of implementing a knowledge check. On one hand, users should be able to work through content grouped into individual courses; on the other, users should be able to test and check their knowledge through quizzes. The best way to implement these requirements in line with [Scroll Viewport](https://www.k15t.com/software/scroll-viewport) was offered by the plugin LMS for Confluence – Courses & Quizzes from Stiltsoft.

With the extensive features of the Courses & Quizzes plugin, a clear and easy-to-use course system in DAV branding could be built on top of the already established knowledgebase.

Individual courses can be populated with various content such as knowledgebase articles, videos or created quizzes. These courses can be found in the dedicated learning portal, which can be accessed directly without going through the knowledgebase. Here, users can find assigned courses and training sessions, start them and continue later as they like.

Further advantages include assigning courses to people without Confluence accounts, as well as a detailed view of users' progress in reports.

Similar advantages apply to creating quizzes. After completing a quiz, each answered question can be checked for correctness. Correctly answered questions come with a short explanation of why the answer is right; for incorrect answers, links to the relevant articles let users find the correct answer.

There are also many ways for editors to design quizzes:

- Creating categorized quizzes with individual questions
- Setting a minimum score to pass the quiz
- Assigning users to specific quizzes
- detailed evaluation (completion rates, time spent, success rates) via quiz reports

For optimal editorial use of the platforms, several workshops on using and editing the knowledgebase as well as further features like courses and quizzes were held alongside the project.

After the project's completion, the DAV has a collaborative and dynamic knowledgebase platform as well as a clear help center, which members of the individual sections can use as a reference work or as a basis of information for training.
